Involving Dads in Childcare - Top 13 Ideas From Dads

May 21, 2010 |16:36 | Dad Care  By : Team X

Dads being involved in the lives of their children is one of the hot topics in parenting. Society has changed and as child care centres we can welcome greater involvement of Dads in the family role and in the day to day routines of children at our centre.

However, in our desire to be all inclusive, and embracing of Dads in child care, we often bypass or forget the fathers' perspective. In general, Dads are more involved in the life of their children than previous generations. They enjoy being part of their child's daily routine, and sometimes this is not just an enjoyment, but a necessity with many Mums in part or full time work. Child care services see more Dads dropping off and collecting their children. However, does this mean that Dads want to be more involved in our child care services?

The options of working from home and more flexible employment may support Dads being more involved in child care services. However, we need to be sensitive to Dads who are stretched for time already with work schedules and outside demands, and we need to look for ways of embracing a greater role of fathers in children's lives while respecting their time and other commitments.

Could an IVA help you spend more time with your familyIf you are a parent and in financial trouble then you may not be spending as much time with your kids as you would like because of the need to bring home as much income as possible.

A quarter of you are worried about neglecting financial security, the survey by Scottish Widows found. You may find an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) answers this concern as it could help clear unsecured debts of at least £15,000.

Over 30 per cent of British parents admit their job gets in the way of spending time with their children. Extra hours could be regularly put in if mounting debt means that more cash is needed to meet climbing interest repayments.

Baby Boomers - How to Communicate with Aging Parents

July 10, 2009 |11:54 | Dad Care | Mom Care  By : Team X

Much has been said about the importance of baby boomers in the 21st century because this generation of 78 million will have considerable power in determining the fabric of American culture. Their parents, born between 1901 and 1945, who are members of the GI Generation and the Silent Generation already know that the baby boomers are their vital link to the quality of life. Almost 30% of all baby boomers are currently helping their aging parents manage their lives in some way.

Sometimes the relative success adult children have with helping their aging parents may be explained by the different values, personal qualities, and behaviors that each generation demonstrates. There really can be a “generation gap” in communication between these generations because they think and act quite differently. In order to create a beneficial rapport and help parents as they age, it would help baby boomers to understand the differences between the generations. It is best to start a dialog with parents about important issues before a sudden event or crisis necessitates baby boomer involvement.

"My parents were distant, unaffectionate people. I don't remember ever being held by them. They were never interested in how I thought or felt. I never felt important to them at all."

"My mother was crazy - nice one minute and the next a screaming maniac. My father was sweet but he was never around, and he never did anything to stop my mother from the emotional abuse."

"My father was an angry violent man and my mother was weak and pathetic. He often beat us and my mother did nothing to protect us."

Parents: Teen led fulfilling life

Holladay » Jeffrey and Nancy Thomas can only imagine how their son, Clayton, would have planned the final two weeks of his life, but both believe that his script couldn't have been much better.
Clayton David Thomas, 16, watched an older brother graduate from high school two weeks ago. He spent a few days in Fort Collins, Colo., where he grew up, meeting the family of his sister's fiance, visiting amusement parks and hanging out with old friends. He attended his sister's wedding Saturday at the Salt Lake Temple, sang a cappella at the wedding luncheon and visited the family cabin in Timber Lakes the next day with his brothers, mother and maternal grandparents.
Lastly, there was a whisper of "I love you, too" from a sleepy Clayton to his father just before the latter left for a business trip to Chicago on Sunday morning.

The History of Father's Day

June 29, 2009 |10:12 | Dad Care  By : Team X

Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards!

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.

At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day.".

CELEBRATION OF FATHER'S DAY

June 22, 2009 |10:09 | Dad Care  By : Team X

"I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection." -- Sigmund Freud."A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child." -- the Knights of Pythagoras "A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty." -- Author Unknown."Father! - to God himself we cannot give a holier name." -- William Wordsworth.$

"Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later... that the man before him was not an aging father but a boy, a boy much like himself, a boy who grew up and had a child of his own and, as best he could, out of a sense of duty and, perhaps love, adopted a role called Being a Father so that his child would have something mythical and infinitely important: a Protector, who would keep a lid on all the chaotic and catastrophic possibilities of life." -- Tom Wolfe.

"One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be." -- Author Unknown.

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." -- Mark Twain.

Minor Children & Your Estate Plan

June 10, 2009 |10:28 | Dad Care  By : Team X

Minor Children & Your Estate PlanAnother reminder of the dangers of not have an estate plan in place if you have minor children. This one from The California Estate Planning Blog.  One of their authors writes (and is right):

I am constantly amazed at how many parents do not have an estate plan in place to protect their minor children.

It's one thing not to be overly concerned when your children are older, but if you have minor children in your home, life insurance policies, real estate and the usual extended family with grandparents, aunts, uncles -- there is almost nothing more important that consulting with an estate planning attorney to find out what you need to do to protect your minor children in case you and your spouse pass away.
