Helping Kids Unwind: Modern kids are busy kids. Regardless of age, their days are filled with activities. Under fives do a range of adult-initiated learning activities designed to give them the best start to their learning lives. School-aged kids have a huge range of leisure and after-school activities to choose from.  It is not uncommon for kids to have four and five extra-curricular activities a week. Nothing wrong with kids being busy as long as they have plenty of chances to relax and unwind.

Relaxation is a key to good mental health and well-being. It is an important life skill for kids to learn. July 6, 2010 |13:59 | Kids  By : Team X

At what age should children be allowed to cycle unsupervised? For paranoid parents, maybe never; for others, perhaps nine or 10. But for one south London couple it's even younger: Oliver and Gillian Schonrock allow their two children to cycle to school together – aged only five and eight.

When can kids cycle on their own

Not for much longer, perhaps: the Schonrocks were censured last week by their school headteacher for allowing them to ride unsupervised the mile-long distance between Alleyn's junior school and their Dulwich home. The Schonrocks say they merely want "to recreate the simple freedom" of their own childhoods; Alleyn's headmaster Mark O'Donnell thinks it might be a matter for the social services.

Keeping hold of your friends is key to happiness in retirement... and children make no difference, say psychologists

April 17, 2010 |13:31 | GrandParents | Kids  By : Team X

Keeping hold of your friends is key to happiness in retirement___ and children make no difference, say psychologistsFriendships rather than family hold the key to happiness in retirement, psychologists said yesterday. They found that pensioners who had strong social networks were 30 per cent more satisfied with their lives.

And, surprisingly, having children or grandchildren made no difference to levels of contentment. That may reflect the fact that offspring can bring financial and childcare commitments, according to Oliver Robinson, who led the research.

He and his University of Greenwich team recruited 279 people aged 52 to 78 for the study. The participants, who included retired doctors, teachers and a restaurant owner, were asked about their experience of retirement, marital status and whether they had children and grandchildren.
